down in the deep blue sea

It's been ridiculously freezing around here.
Like windchills hitting -25.
Like frostbite happening within minutes.
Like it's time to head south.

So I've been day-dreaming of warmer things.
My bed, hot tubs, heated blankets, fire places, tropical climates, the beach...
And then I figured I'm not the only one dreaming of warmer things and places! So, we're traveling to warmer climates for today's theme.
Ok yes, it's not necessarily all in warmer climates. But in my head, it is.
So grab your flip flops, sun glasses, beach towel and sunscreen and come join me in paradise...

We're going to switch it up a bit this week and start with some fun BOOKS!!

Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae - fun short poems about animals in the ocean (and they go great with an activity farther down the page!) Seriously... these poems are a blast!
Hooray for Fish! by Lucy Cousins
I'm the Biggest Thing in the Ocean by Kevin Sherry - who doesn't want to hear a story about a giant squid?!
Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle - follow along as Mr. Seahorse protects Mrs. Seahorse's eggs until they're ready to hatch! Did you know the male seahorse delivers the eggs?!
Star of the Sea by Janet Halfmann - all about the daily life of a starfish. How do they feed?!
Flotsam by David Weisner - a little by finds an old camera on the shore... but you'll never guess what he finds on that camera!
Dolphin Baby! by Nicola Davies - follow a baby dolphin from the time it's born as it learns to swim and survive!

Next (just because I feel like doing things a little backwards today) are some funny SONGS AND FINGERPLAYS to get your little ones singing, dancing, and moving around!

all from Little Campers (they offer a FREE digital download full of MORE songs and activities!)

(tune of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game")

How fun are those songs?! Be sure to check out Little Campers FREE download too for more great songs! Next up: CRAFTS!

1. Foil Fish from Nurture Store - talk about a fun, new sensory experience while create some sweet art at the same time!
2. Ocean Animal Book from Welcome to Room 36 - how fun to go back and read the poems over and over (great for language development) and see the pictures they drew!
3. Coffee Filter Jellyfish from Tippytoe Crafts - science anyone?? ;)
4. TP Roll Octopus from Just Between Friends - these are just adorable. And don't forget to count!
5. Handprint Crab from Let's Talk with Whitney SLP - great for tiny hands!
6. Crayon Resist Ocean from KinderArt - a new experience to see what happens! Another option: draw a scene with white crayon on white paper and have the kids paint to find the picture!
7. Octopus Counting from All Kids Network - great way to incorporate math!

And last, but not least, ACTIVITIES!! And I'm super stoked for these activities!!

1. Feed the Shark from Toddler Approved - numbers, letters, colors, shapes... make the mouth big or small!
2. Laundry Basket Boat from Inner Child Fun - fun imaginative play!
3. Sea Life Action Cards from Mess for Less - get those bodies moving!
4. Fish for Shapes from Little Family Fun - switch it up for colors, numbers, letters, etc! And laminate the fish shapes for future use!
5. Ocean Sensory Bag from Craftulate - they can make the fishies swim around!
6. Ocean Sensory Bin from Fun-a-Day - super simple!
7. Ocean Animal Movement Game from Toddler Approved - great game to get little bodies moving around the house during the cold winter!
8. Under the Sea Bingo from Artsy Fartsy Mama - FREE PRINTABLE!!

Feeling warmer yet?!
I am!
Except now I really want to be there in real life!
I want to swim with the dolphins...
Ok maybe not because I'm terrified of all things fish (don't judge). But I do desperately want to be watching them from the sun soaked beach!

Stay warm friends!
